Orchid Mantis Threat Display T-Shirt

A premium ring-spun cotton t-shirt featuring a mixed-media bleach-spatter stencil illustration of an orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus). The mantis is reared square-on into a full threat display — forelegs raised and spread wide, wings flared, antennae swept out, held perfectly still and near-perfectly symmetrical. Rendered in one pale bone-white ink on near-black, with no outline anywhere: the shape emerges purely out of where the spatter landed and dissolves back into the dark.

This is a deimatic display — the posture a mantis adopts when it wants to be believed. Everything about it is theatre: the height, the spread, the stillness. It is also, in an orchid mantis, about four centimetres tall. Anyone who keeps mantids has stood over a small enclosure and been genuinely, briefly, told off.

Made by spattering bleach through a hand-cut paper stencil, so the ink either landed or it did not — every gap in the animal is the garment showing straight through.
